I’m a big fan of traditional superstitions. On the days prior to Jan 1, I spend all of my time cleaning the house. I set up a theme table (all the things I hope to do in the New Year represented by one or more items), as well as write and print a goals list for the next year. The list includes places I want to travel to, the major things I plan to buy, and the things I want to do.
My theme for the next year is Evolution. The next year is the start of a new decade, and with it comes changes not entirely dissimilar to the year 2000. The 2010’s were a time of stabilizing technology – the skillsets were expanded – and everything got easier. Enough for us to take all of the technology for granted. But the 2020’s – man – if I wanted to bet on what to call the decade, I would probably call it “Turbulence”. I don’t believe it’s going to be a smooth ride, yo.
But we are only thinking in terms of 1 year. As technologists, especially as an operational DBA, I plan to evolve to cloud technology. To having a better understanding of Python. Additionally, to getting a better understanding of Postgresql on a development level. These should provide a good foundation for the initial part of the decade. . .
Okay – I slightly believe this is devolution: as development DBA’s have typically been a lighter skillset to the sysadmin-like operational DBA, but the knowledge and understanding of the cloud allows me to change that perception a bit. It provides distinct challenges that an operational DBA nor a development DBA has when dealing with third party managed systems. In the start of my career, python was how college students learned computer science – real programmers wrote in C++ or Java. Now – it runs 3D programs, deep learning, and script-kiddie hacking tools, IOT. I blame all those college kids . . .
On a macro scale, I predict the rise of small shops – who now have a greater and more agile power in managed services. I see the resurgence of Microsoft, though there isn’t anything that will temper Amazon or Google. I mean – think of that for a second. When I first heard of Amazon, they were an online bookstore and I was graduating college (at the age of 30, lol). When google was the “hackers choice”, everyone was still on AOL and Yahoo. Will there be something or someone else on the horizon to take away their power? Maybe from China?
For my personal hobbies, I am evolving my cosplay skills to higher levels of 3D printing, leatherworking, sewing and design. This includes pewter and aluminum casting, ventilation holes and flaps, different screws for attachment. My motorcycle trailer is moving from an open trailer to a cargo trailer. My truck is getting upgraded to a newer model.
For health: run, swim, climb. More running, weekly laps, and climbing type exercises (finger strength, muscle ups, that kind of thing). Functional fit. I also plan to be more restrictive with my OMAD diet (one-meal-a-day).
Lastly – I plan to go back in time with skillsets. Way back in time. The base skills like hunting, forging and gardening. Darkness, for most of us, is only a light switch away.
Happy New Year.
